Ever since the invention of Pods, portable moving containers have become a common service for many moving companies of all types. You may have seen a moving pod before on a neighborhood street corner without even knowing what it was. Their popularity has come about in part, because of the convenience they can provide to consumers over the rental of a moving truck or van. With that said a lot of people still don’t really know what they are, so the purpose of this article is to educate people about them a little bit.

So, what are moving pods? Typically, they’re steel or wooden box contraptions with an aluminum siding (or some other common siding) to help keep your stuff safe from rain, debris, animals, etc. Moving pods are sturdy not only to for the save keeping of client belongs but also so that they can be stacked on top of each other for storage. Sizes range from about 400 cubic feet to 1000 cubic feet depending on the company, and all moving pods are around 7 to 8 feet tall so that they can be walk into while moving.

Renting Process and Things to Know

Moving pods are fairly simple to rent, calling up the moving company, getting a quote, and setting up a delivery date is typically all you’ll have to do. There is one caveat for certain situations and home owners and that is to make sure that your driveway is large enough to entirely fit the moving pod. Otherwise, putting one of these containers on the street will require a permit that you’ll have to go out of your way to get. Normally, the moving company will be aware of any permit requirements that you’ll need.

When the moving pod is delivered you can pack everything away at your leisure. After this is done, there are a couple ways to use a moving pod, for storage and relocation. For storage, the pod is sent to a centralized warehouse where your stuff is stored. You then pay a monthly fee for you stuff to stay in storage. The second option is to use the moving pods to relocate your stuff, most likely to a new home. In this case, you agree on a deliver date for the new home. The pod should be delivered by this date and you can then leisurely unpack everything.

Costs of Renting a Moving Pod

There will be an initial deliver fee (about $250) and a retrieval fee after the move is completed (about $50). Depending on your location, storage costs for a moving pod is going to be around $200 per month. It will cost at least $200 a day for transportation if you’re going to do a long distance move.

It should be noted some people have had problems with extra charges and customer service. Watch out for extra equipment (blankets, dollies, tie downs, etc.) upon delivery of a moving pod as this will be billed to you. Also, be wary of delivery dates, as they have a tendency to be late, and storage billing cycle date, as sometimes they’ll tie up the pod is someway and charge for that extra month (even if it’s they’re fault).

That title sounds like something out of Rocky and Bullwinkle. Anyway, moving can be a very stressful time. There is usually a very strict timeline that you have to follow: you have a new job to start, the kids have to start school, and, on top of it all, moving companies charge for any additional days you may take to move. That last fact is likely the most stressful of all and that’s why it’s important to get the best moving company possible to handle your move. Getting a respectable, affordable moving company is the key to reducing the stress of a move.

If we had to move tomorrow, ABF U-Pack would be the moving company of choice. It’s simply a solid company. They have multiple moving solutions. Like moving pods? U-Pack has Relocubes (essentially the same thing). Want the traditional moving truck option like U-Haul or Budget Trucks? Well that is primarily what they primarily do.

What’s the best part about ABF U-Pack you ask? It’s there nearly spotless customer service record. Take a look at they’re Epinion ratings. It’s about at a 4.5, which for a moving company is a great rating. Usually, most movers have a number of complaints against them, but they seem to be the exception. And that is why we recommend them, they’re inexpensive and a solid moving company to go with next time you move.
